Meta tags are used by some - but not all - search engines to help determine how your site will rank. According to this article, only Inktomi and Teoma gives it any major weight. Meta tags are only one of many methods search engines use for ranking sites.   Click here for more on Search Engines.
Meta-tags are inserted into your HTML in the HEAD section to tell search engine robots what your site is about. Proper use of META tags will help your site achieve good rankings in search engines that use them. Some search engines will use meta tag descriptions as the description of your site in a search return. This java script will help you create meta tags from your input. The tags generated should be placed into the <HEAD> section of your page, under the TITLE.

Description:
The description is displayed by some search engines as the site description they offer in search results. (Others use the first few sentences of your text.)   Make sure it is an accurate advertisement for your site, enticing the searcher to choose your site to visit. Include your top 1-5 keywords. It should be less than 150 characters. Keywords:
Keywords are used by search engines to help determine the relevancy of your site to the search query. Use words that you feel visitors would use when searching for a site like yours. Keywords should be separated by a comma then a space. Keep it under 1,000 characters including and commas and spaces but remember, too many keywords dilute the value of each one. Rating: Rate your site for your viewers.

Robots: Search engine robots find pages to index and add to their database by following links on a page. This code tells search engines if they should index your page and if they should follow the links on the page to index the connected pages. Most of the time you want the search engine to index and follow, but you might not if you have a page you would like kept private - a club members only page, for example.

Revisit Interval: For the search engines that use this tag (most don't) , it tells them when you'd prefer their spider come back to re-index your page. Don't make it less than 30 days. Use with caution. If you have obtained a high ranking, why would you want to force a revisit that might lower it?
