Why join a sorority?

One of the many decisions that face college students is whether or not to join a Greek organization. Membership in a Greek organization has the potential to enhance what a college student gets out of his/her college education and experience. Being involved with the Greeks offers the opportunity to develop strong and lasting friendships and experience positive personal growth. In addition, Greek members can develop responsibility and leadership skills by electing to be an officer within an organization. Moreover, a major part of Greek life is interacting with the campus and local community through community service, volunteerism and fund raising projects.

All Greek organizations are governed by the All Greek Council. The Inter-Fraternity Council (IFC) and Inter-Sorority Council (ISC) are also governing bodies over the fraternities and sororities respectively. Every organization has representation in each of these bodies and all Greek members are eligible to run for a leadership position within the councils.

IFC and ISC coordinate the membership processes for the fraternities and sororities respectively. This process is called rush. Rush is a set period of time in which interest meetings and social events occur. Rush is a time to get to know members of each organization in a casual and relaxed atmosphere. The rush process is concluded when an organization makes an offer to join, called a bid. In order to be eligible for a bid, the student must go through the rush process, have successfully completed at least 12.0 credit hours, have at least a 2.0 cumulative GPA and can not be on academic warning or probation. Once the bid is issued and accepted, the student becomes familiar with the organization and its membership by pledging. The length of the pledge period differs between organizations, but they all conclude once a person is formally initiated into the organization.

If you are interested in joining a Greek organization, look for information on campus at the beginning of each semester.
